In today’s digital world the threat of cyber fraud is growing, especially for small businesses. It is important to consider these few simple steps to keep your information secure and avoid fraud.
1. Password security is extremely important to avoid fraud. Avoid using the same password across multiple accounts. In terms of password strength, it is important to avoid common phrases, personal information such as names and birthdays and simple sequences.
Using longer passwords with a mix of upper and lower case, numbers and symbols. You should also aim to change your passwords at least every 6 months to avoid the likelihood of being hacked.
2. Using secure WiFi networks is equally important. When using public, non-secure networks at local coffee shops or restaurants your chances of hackers being able to access your secure accounts is much higher. Opt for a VPN or use your hot spot when you are on the go.
3. If using mobile apps for banking, sign up for text alerts from your banking institution to inform you of possible threats or potential fraud in your account. Additionally, opt in to two factor authentication options. It can be tedious to enter another form of password after logging, but this will ensure you or anyone else signing in to your account, is in fact you, by sending you a one-time code to your phone or email.
4. Be aware of scams or phishing emails or texts. Many emails and texts are being sent with requests to pay invoices (tolls, software renewals, etc.) you should never click on any links or download attachments from unknown sources. If you are receiving information from what you believe to be a known source but are being asked to pay or enter your account information, when you are not expecting it, pay attention to the sender email address. Hackers are very smart and will sometimes create email addresses like those of individuals you email with, but one letter or number will be off in the address.

As business owners, we move quickly, trying to maximize our time and efficiency, but it is very important to take the time to pay attention to these details when you are using technology.
